alb3674270 Portrait of Gerard de Lairesse. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 44 3/8 x 34 1/2 in. (112.7 x 87.6 cm). Date: 1665-67.Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) was, in his day, a well-known painter, etcher, and art theorist. He suffered from congenital syphilis, which caused him to go blind about 1690; he subsequently focused his energies on art theory. By the time this portrait was painted, in 1665, the ravaging effects of the disease were visible in his swollen features and bulbous nose. Recording his unfortunate appearance with an uncompromising directness, Rembrandt invested his subject with an air of quiet dignity. Although the sitter's theories on the ideal in painting were antithetical to Rembrandt's style, which Lairesse disparagingly likened to "liquid mud on the canvas," the portrayal is a sympathetic one. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3672001 Man in Oriental Costume ("The Noble Slav"). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 60 1/8 x 43 3/4in. (152.7 x 111.1cm). Date: 1632.Compared with Rembrandt's formal portraits of the same year, this picture is remarkable for its brilliant brushwork and dramatic illumination. It was probably painted shortly after he moved from his native Leiden to Amsterdam, and in its exotic subject and style was surely intended for a knowledgeable collector. Pictures of imaginary Persian, Ottoman, or otherwise "Oriental" princes were popular at the time because of new trade contacts between the Dutch and the Middle East. However, the model is a Dutchman who appears in other paintings by Rembrandt and by artists in his circle. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3678296 Portrait of a Young Woman with a Fan. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 49 1/2 x 39 3/4 in. (125.7 x 101 cm). Date: 1633.This animated portrait has a pendant showing the sitter's husband rising from a chair (Taft Museum, Cincinnati). When seen together, husband and wife seem to respond to each other, making these among Rembrandt's most inventive compositions of the early 1630s. Rembrandt's early experience as a painter of dramatic history scenes and his close study of physiognomy and character during the time he spent in Leiden prepared him to be the most original and successful portraitist in Amsterdam, where he arrived in the winter of 1631-32. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3628894 Head of Christ. Artist: Style of Rembrandt (Dutch, 1650s). Dimensions: 16 3/4 x 13 1/2 in. (42.5 x 34.3 cm); with added strips 18 5/8 x 14 5/8 in. (47.3 x 37.1 cm).Rembrandt painted this subject a number of times; three examples, one described as "Een Christus tonie nae't leven" ("a head of Christ done from life," that is, from a model probably found in the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam), were cited in the 1656 inventory of the artist's possessions. Of the dozen bust-length portraits of Christ known today, only the small panel in Berlin is universally accepted, but several others are obviously the work of pupils. The present picture, which is sensitive both in conception and execution, must be either by Rembrandt or by one of his most gifted followers. The issue, as so often is the case, is complicated by the fact that the paint surface has been flattened and badly abraded. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3626177 The Standard Bearer (Floris Soop, 1604-1657). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 55 1/4 x 45 1/4in. (140.3 x 114.9cm). Date: 1654.The flag, the plume in the hat, and the tooled leather baldric (sword-belt) indicate that the figure is an ensign in one of Amsterdam's civic guard companies. He is almost certainly Floris Soop, a wealthy bachelor whose estate included 140 paintings. Rembrandt conveys a strong sense of character and reveals extraordinary skill in the vigorously modeled face, the thick hair, and costume details. The impressions of volume in the figure and space in the background have been diminished by abrasion and darkening with age. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3621218 Pilate Washing His Hands. Artist: Style of Rembrandt (Dutch, 17th century). Dimensions: 51 1/4 x 65 3/4 in. (130.2 x 167 cm). Date: probably 1660s.Critical opinions of this picture have varied considerably since about 1905, when Wilhelm von Bode described it as "a somewhat abnormal work" by Rembrandt. However, most scholars since the 1940s have dated the painting to the 1660s and assigned it to an anonymous pupil. The composition is reminiscent of mature works by Rembrandt but the Rembrandtesque surface effects fail to convey anything like the master's command of illumination and modelling. The name of his only known pupil of the 1660s, Arent de Gelder, has been put forward speculatively. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3652049 The Toilet of Bathsheba. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 22 1/2 x 30 in. (57.2 x 76.2 cm). Date: 1643.King David, barely discernible atop the palace in the background, sees Bathsheba bathing and sends for her, despite the fact that she is married to his loyal soldier Uriah (Samuel 2:2-5). The king later arranges for Uriah to be killed in battle. The painting is one of a few dating from the 1640s in which Rembrandt revives his early, precisely descriptive manner in order to produce fine "cabinet pictures" for collectors. The others are also religious but not erotic, as this one was surely intended to be. The original state of the badly worn background may be judged from a reproductive engraving of 1763. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3650039 Woman with a Pink. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 29 3/8 in. (92.1 x 74.6 cm). Date: early 1660s.Wearing a romantically outdated costume and exotic jewelry, the woman holds a pink, or carnation, symbol of love and marriage. If the sitter in the pendant portrait, Man with a Magnifying Glass (14.40.621) is Pieter Haringh, then the modestly smiling woman is his wife, Elizabeth Delft (ca. 1620-1679). About a decade earlier the same couple, in conventional attire, was portrayed by Rembrandt's former pupil Jan Victors (1619-after January 1676). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

(94.3 x 77.8 cm).Rembrandt's authorship was doubted as early as the 1920s. In subject and style the painting is typical of the master's immediate circle in the 1640s; attributions to Govert Flinck and to Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, both of whom studied under Rembrandt in the 1630s, have been proposed in recent years. The dashing figure's gesture may have been adopted from that of the captain in The Night Watch of 1642. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1632.This portrait dating from Rembrandt's first year in Amsterdam is remarkable for its quality and condition. The subtleties of light and texture found in the rugged face and wispy hair, in the parchmentlike layers of the ruff, and even in the black costume are effects that the artist had gradually mastered in his native Leiden during the preceding few years. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb3665260 Hendrickje Stoffels (1626-1663). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 30 7/8 x 27 1/8 in. (78.4 x 68.9 cm). Date: mid-1650s.The sitter is probably Hendrickje Stoffels, who was the painter's companion from about 1650 until her early death in 1663. Rembrandt's responsibility for this portrait has never been doubted, although the signature and date appear to have been added by another hand. The picture may have been painted at different intervals in the years about 1655-60, and it may be unfinished in the drapery and hand. The paint surface is badly abraded, making judgments of quality and of Rembrandt's intentions difficult. It seems likely, however, that the artist had Titian in mind: for example, his famous painting (known from many copies) of the repentant Magdalen. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).
